Been working like a dog the past couple of weeks on projects and cleaning to get the house ready to rent. It goes on the market tomorrow. I brought out all my favorite mid-century chairs (that I keep locked up in my bedroom so the kids don't destroy them) and arranged them in the front sitting room. I like it....feels all grown up (as opposed to the kid's playroom which is normally there).

I love the look of roman shades with the clean look that still allows you to see the architechture/molding around a window. However, the tutorials on how to make them seem daunting to me. Wow! I am loving this table arrangement! I wish orchids were not so $$$. I want to have a small outdoor dinner party one of these summer nights and put up two of these floral arrangements. I love the brown cloth napkins too set against the vibrant magenta. Those would be easy enough to sew quickly w/ some cheap brown fabric. A line of nice cream or white colored candles down the middle of the table would be in order also. Just Fabulous!!

A lamp made from recycled bottled. I started to make one of these once, but I stopped. Cutting those bottle bottoms was hard work/ hard on the hands. This is a nice one found here for $225.

I hand-sewed these ties for my boys. It is really really really hard to find ties for little boys in stores, so I made some from a pattern from the Purl Bee website. The white shirts are from a thrift store...about $2 ea. We are going to a wedding in May and the bride's colors are turquoise. It is also a beach wedding. I thought bright blue ties and bright green Hawaiian shorts would be cute.
We tested/modeled the clothes in the backyard...only for a little while though so they didn't get dirty.

Burke Chairs (tulip chairs) on the cheap!

We took a trip up to the mother ship (IKEA) on Saturday before Easter. On the way home, we stopped in Lockhart, TX (in between Austin and San Antonio) and purchased some retro 1950’s Burke/Tulip chairs that I saw advertised on Craigslist ($25!). I was wondering why no one in Austin had gobbled these up yet. Then I knew...it was a haul out there....so very far outside of Austin. It was still worth it though; I was excited to find them. It took us longer to get home than usual, because we took a wrong turn on I-10 and started going toward Houston! Lots of driving indeed to pick up these chairs. I am going to clean up/fix up the chairs (going to paint the orange chair white also) and make new cushions for them with Amy Butler fabric one of these days.

An inspiring sewing room found here. I really like the blue walls and all of the matching white...I'm a sucker for monochrome looks with a punch of bright color.

I've been redecorating my sewing room the past couple of days, so I have been looking at a lot of pics of sewing/craft rooms lately. I'll post a pic soon of the redecorating outcome. I am liking how it is coming along, better use of space for work.

I love fabric!…especially bright colors and retro looking mod prints (like Amy Butler). My newest addition to my fabric stash are the 2 quilt fat quarters in the upper left-hand corner (found at walmart for under $2). I’ve been spending a lot of time in my sewing room lately. My wonderful husband was so generous to let me convert one whole room in the house into a sewing/yoga room. I hardly ever do yoga in there (I have to have people around to work out; so I work out at the gym), but I do sew a good amount in there. Lately I have been working on this pattern (little boy’s tie) from PurlBee for my 2 boys to wear at a beach wedding in May in Florida (which I get to photograph….I’m so excited!). The bottom 2 pics are of my little devil just for fun…no I do not let him in the sewing room.

MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!

This Christmas was a fun one. This was the first xmas where we did not travel. We stayed home (hubby, the boys and I) so I served up a plate of crazy on xmas morning. I got up at o'dark thirty in the morning and transformed myself into Cindy Loo Who from the Grinch. I was inspired as we had watched 2 Grinch movies on xmas eve...the classic animated one and the newer Jim Carey movie. What a work of art that classic animated movie is. So inspiring! I think we need to watch it every xmas eve for tradition. I have since cut my hair very short, so it will be harder to dress up like this next year.

christmas came early this year. Got a new camera (DSLR) that allows to variations in depth of field. I love it! Used a shallow DOF (depth of field ) to get this one of my son holding a Christmas ornament. If you look closely, you can see me reflected in the ornament taking his photo :)

Replica Ugly Doll Art & a green wall

I removed some big brown built-in bookcases from our sons' room and low and behold found a hole in the wall! I had to cover up the wall or re-install the bookcases. So I decided to cover it up with some home-made kid art. I got a large canvas from the craft store and some fabric and made an applique quilt top of an ugly doll and then staple gunned it to the canvas and voila! It measures 40 in w x 30 in h and cost $27 to make. I like it. The pictures however, are not good (can't wait to get a decent camera) and the color of the fabric is all wrong though--not a good enough study in contrast. It's a good enough solution though to hide the hole. I worked with fabric because I'm afraid my 3 year old son would find a way to rip up a real painting. I also painted their wall a chartreuse green. I used the outline of this doll to trace another on some soft fabric to make a playdoll for them. (will post later when finished).

Found a new artist I like....Kristine Baerlin. She specializes in modern portraits of children. I'm partial I guess because that the only type of painting I have ever done so far.

Bargain Trumpet Table

Found this little trumpet table at Target for $24--then got it on clearance for $19. I love it! The family room is very small and there's no room on the side of the couch on either side for a table to set a drink. This little table fits right up to the edge in the front--perfect drink height. The quality of the table is not that great though. Keep your expectations low. It is very cute and functional but I suspect the paint will chip off soon (it is metal and white paint and will also dent easily)

Here are some pics of the new house. We have been here a little under 2 months. I painted one wall of our family room a robin egg blue, which inspired me to finally getting around to taking some pics of the other rooms too. Still a work in progress.....

This is a cheap beige carpet from walmart or somewhere with IKEA circular rugs placed on top. I love how it looks and I didn't have to spend $$ on a real modern rug.

Tinting Window in Shower

We have huge windows in our master bathroom above the tub. Right now the previous owner made some homemade stainded glass (made of plastic) of butterflies for privacy. I am thinking of ordering some roll-on window film to replace the butterflies (will post before and after pic later).

This site has a blue green color I may try. Going for that Black and transparent blue/green you see in Banana Republic stores. There is already a thick wooden black trim around the windows now that I love. I'll then maybe paint the cabinets black to match the window pane.

Sneek Peak of new Playroom off Kitchen

This is the new playroom we made off the kitchen so the boys can have a space downstairs to keep their toys. I wanted it off the kitchen to keep an eye on them while I cooked, etc. So the actual dining room area is a playroom, the dining table is in what is supposed to be the formal living area (we have no use for "formal" anyway). Our couch is in the family room on the other side of the kitchen. Most of the items in the play room are from IKEA. I love the Expedit shelves that divide the room. I also love the Knappa chandelier we hung. I've been wanting to hang that thing for months!

I am going to paint this whole wall with Chalkboard paint.
Don't tell my husband! If he doesn't like it, I can just paint
over it. The room needs some drama.

Table is off center in the room so the boys can ride their trucks around the house.

Hardwood Floors Makeover in the new House

Here are some soon after pics taken of the new hardwood floors we had put in the new house. The "before" was an old grey carpet. I hate having carpet in high traffic areas especially with little ones.
I love the new floors. We also painted the boys' playroom blue and lime green (although the lime green turned out more yellow than we had liked).

We are in the new house (the first one described in this earlier post.) I love having all this space! The boys seem to be happier here too with all the room to run around. We are still unpacking and organizing. Haven't set up the camera/computer connection thing yet. More pictures to follow
soon. We pulled up all the old grey an pink carpets and put in hardwood in the living and dining areas. We put dark grey tile in the master bathroom and a brown "frizze"/shaggy carpet in the bedroom and upstairs.

P.S. These are "before" pictures....decor of the previous owner. I love all the windows on the back side of the house!

As mentioned in an earlier post, I love bamboo and have thought of planting it outside our bathroom window for privacy. Matching the carpet to the Wall

I really like this technique of how Jessie from the My Mod Style blog matched the color of the carpets to the wall. Very balanced and monochromatic which I love. Color without being busy.
You can tell she is a designer. The carpets she used are from IKEA (@ $9 ea.). I didn't like any of the colors but they had some white round carpets....I wonder if I could dye those to be a color I liked or if that would be catastrophe.

I wonder if there would be anyway to insert it into the bathroom windows (like window film). It would have to be protected from moisture though somehow (maybe laminated?). The pic here below is of the bathroom of the house we bid on. The current stained glass inserts pop out and can be replaced. OR....perhaps I could just plant real bamboo outside of the window.

Random picture from Flickr of Maastricht Netherlands. I used to drive up to Maastricht often on the weekends when I lived in Germany (had some friends who lived nearby). I loved that town. Great architechture and a good Scandinavian feel. I bought a very simple creme colored wedding dress there in a cute boutique that I never used for its intended purpose (thank God). I still have it and wear it to formal events with a shawl.

Planning to get a couple of these Expedit bookcases from IKEA to block off a play area for the kids off the kitchen. Would probably use boxes (the clear ones in IKEA) to store toys. In the store, the solid wood doors gave the cleanest look, but were pricey at almost $20 a door.

Cute Felt Octopus seen on Design Sponge. I like simple animal designs in felt. Felt is good as it entails minimal sewing....don't have to do anything to the edges. This particular one is great how they've used a color print for the background. I've been meaning to make an ABC wall hanging with felt for the boys but haven't gotten around to it.

Simple headboard - possible future DIY

I like these headboards. A possible future DIY perhaps. I like the simplicity and warmth of it. If I found the right piece of wood, this could be a possibility. Idea for bedroom shades.....double honeycomb blinds from (next day blinds....my Aunt has them....invisible when raised all the way). Carpet: a seagrass type rug at foot of bed like 1st photo. The house we bid on has grey carpet in the master bedroom which we probably won't change out, so this color scheme might work. Wall behind headboard: paint a greyish/mud color for contrast....rest of walls could be white.

I think I like the smaller ones better. Not sure. Saw them in person the other day in Target. A black one on display had scratches all over it looking cheap. Not very good advertising.

See if the cushion will fit over the $8 Jeff chair from IKEA. Then see about sewing a cover for the top part of the chair with left over white hawaiian fabric from wedding. Paint the bottom part of the chair white (or just paint the whole chair white). Maybe do two of these and then two white butterfly chairs.

Color Scheme idea for formal living room

I have a couch very similar to this--a slightly less curvier version (the white Ektorp couch from Ikea). I thought I had grown tired of it, but this picture from Apartment therapy of its use by a swedish couple has breathed new life/inspiration into it for me.
I think I'll place it in the formal living room, paint the backdrop wall a dark chocolate and get a white retro looking coffee table (could use Ikea Lack turn on side, paint white, and place wheels on bottom). I even like the pink flowers in the vase they used. Pink would look good against a brown chocolate wall. I'd then hang the Knapp Ikea lamp in the room. Opposite from the couch I can place the 2 danish rope chairs. Could also get 2 more benjamin stools from Ikea and paint white to use as side tables for the couch. Sorry for the rambling. I need to remember this idea for later.
